The politics of amending the Native Title Act to satisfy the High Court's decision in the Mabo case are fraught with danger for all sides, making it a virtual lose-lose situation for the Howard government. The history of the Wik debate, its court cases, and the Howard government's 10-point plan, are thoroughly analyzed. The debate has increasingly become polarized, threatening Howard's governing coalition.

Battle for the front bench

Article Abstract:

Jackie Kelly, Danna Vale and Trish Draper are expected to win prominent positions in John Howard's Coalition government. Howard will make his decision after all the election results are announced. Kelly is a contender for the sports ministership along with Bruce Baird and Andrew Thomson. Draper is expected to be nominated in a social policy area and Vale may be a junior minister or parliamentary secretary.
