Y2K, chip woes threaten PC makers' earnings

Earnings for 4th qtr 1999 of personal computer manufacturers may be lower than expected due to a worldwide shortage of computer chips and a reduction by corporations of budgets allocated for Y2K. For instance, Gateway has already announced that its revenue for the period would be lower by $150 million from lower Y2K sales and delayed chip shipments from Intel. Likewise, IBM said that its 4th qtr 1999 sales would be lower than what has been forecasted.

CEO reboots Compaq spirit

Article Abstract:

Compaq Computer Corp CEO Michael Capellas is working on revitalizing operations at the world's biggest computer manufacturer. In a satellite broadcast to Compaq's global units, Capellas reiterated the need to reestablish the operation of the company, which is currently suffering from competition. The executive is seen to be staging a turnaround for Compaq, after the firm accumulated losses of $3 billion.

Dell meets earnings forecast, but sales outlook uncertain

Article Abstract:

Dell Computer registered a net income of $462 million, or 17 cents per share, for 1st qtr 2001, 1% down from its net income during the same quarter in 2000. Robust sales of corporate servers helped boost Dell's revenues to $8 billion, up by 10% from the year-ago period. During the same quarter, Dell became the world's largest maker of PCs, surpassing Compaq. However, its stock fell by $1 to $24.88 per share during after- hours trading on May 17, 2001.
