Issues concerning high risk investment of superannuation funds, in the wake of HIH Insurance's collapse and Commercial Nominees' losses, are discussed. An interpretation of the law which allows funds to take part in geared transactions is offered.

The Australian Taxation Office is considering its attitude to self-managed super funds and may get tough on gearing rules. The rules would not affect the tax office and are intended to reduce risk and protect the funds.
