American Express Co and Discover Financial Services are in the process of issuing new account numbers to over 10,000 clients. The move is in reaction to a computer hacking incident that resulted in the compromise of credit information from online clients who purchased music from CD Universe. A hacker decided to release the confidential information after CD Universe failed to be blackmailed into paying a $100,000-ransom.

Online retailers selling cosmetic products have increased as companies seek to capture some of the $11.8 billion spent annually by consumers on beauty enhancement products. Online sales are expected to account for 5% of the overall revenue for health and beauty products by 2004. Among the current and to be launched cosmetic sites are Eve.com, Sephora.com, Reflect.com, Ibeauty.com and Beautyscene.com.

Internet portal Excite @Home Inc made a foray into the business of e- greeting cards with the acquisition of Blue Mountain Arts' Bluemountain.com for $780 million. The deal includes about $430 million in stock and $350 million in cash as well as a possible additional payment of as much as $270 million in stock on the condition that the No. 14 online site gains heavy traffic during the Christmas season. The acquisition is an effort on the part of Excite to convert some loyal Bluemountain.com users into loyal buyers and users of the company's ultra-fast cable modem service.
