Toyota Motor Corp will begin taking orders for its Prius gasoline-electric hybrid sedan only through the automaker's Web site www.toyota.com from Jun-Nov 2000. Orders for the four-door, four-passenger car will be filled by Toyota dealerships beginning in early August. Prius, which costs $20,450 and features an extraordinarily powerful motor and a 1.5-liter, 70 horsepower engine, is expected to rate 52 miles per gallon in the city and 45 mpg on the highway.

Kia's new Optima mid-sized sedan is a four-door front-wheel-drive model that the South Korean automaker is positioning against the Ford Taurus, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and the Nissan Altima. The Optima is priced $1,000 higher than the Hyundai Sonata, on which it is based, but a lot less than Japanese mid-sized sedans. The LX base model is equipped with a four-cylinder engine and manual transmission, and a suggested retail price of $15,299.

Ford Motor launched its new, redesigned 2000-model Taurus midsize family sedan that features the Advanced Restraints System (ARS) at the New York auto show on Mar 30, 1999. The new sedan, which will be sold starting in Sep and Oct 1999, is no longer ovoid as compared to its predecessor, the 1999-model Taurus. Likewise, Ford Motor's 2000-model is touted as a paragon of comfort and safety.
