Parents seek safer air bags

Article Abstract:

Automobile manufacturers could face tougher air bag rules by Mar 1, 2000, if the Parents for Safer Air Bags, a group of parents of children killed or injured by air bags, are successful with its lobbying. The group has been opposing the proposal by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to ease provisions in existing air bag warning label rules. Despite conflicting views on the agency's proposal, both automakers and the parents' group agree on continuing to allow air bag on-off switches.

Court: injured motorists can't sue for lack of air bags

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court ruled on May 22, 2000 that automakers cannot be sued for not providing airbags in cars made before the airbag requirement was imposed. Carmakers and lawyers of plaintiffs praised the Court for ruling that federal law and safety standards can supersede state court cases. The ruling will affect only a minority of cases which contend that automakers should have installed air bags earlier.

Air pollution claim costs Honda $17M

Article Abstract:

Honda is to spend $17 million and impose extended warranties on 1.6 million vehicles as settlement to government claims of disabling emission control systems. The settlement was made by Honda after routine testing revealed that the diagnostic computers in the company's cars and luxury brand Acuras for detecting problems, such as misfiring spark plugs, failed to turn off dashboard 'check engine' lights. The company is to cover expenses for two emission inspections, an ignition system tuneup and other emission-related repairs for 14 years, which is expected to amount to $250 million according to the government. The $17 million settlement fee will be divided between the federal government and California, partly for funding pollution reduction projects.
