Article Abstract:

Bouchard's asendency to premier of Quebec could leave the Bloc Quebecois without a leader until its next convention in 1997. However, it is likely that an interim leader would be appointed sooner, possibly Gilles Duceppe. The Bloc could also lose its status as the official opposition party.

Roux resigned following the publication of an interview in the magazine 'L'actualite' in which he admitted participating as a youth in a demonstration with anti-Semitic overtones. The former actor's appointment had been controversial due to his outspoken opposition to Quebec sovereignty.

The Quebec referendum will diminish the popularity and stature of leading politicians on both sides of the vote when it concludes on Oct 30, 1995. Premier Jacques Parizeau will be marginalized, and Lucien Bouchard's vilifying of federalists will hurt negotiations.
