Article Abstract:
The highest-quality cars and trucks in the US have lagged a little in quality. The overall stability of quality scores is good news to manufacturers. However, declines among routinely high-scoring brands such as Honda, Toyota and Acura cloud the picture. The Lexus L400 has remained the best since a similar report was conducted in Jun 2000, wth 61 problem per 100 vehicles. On the other hand, Kia Sephia sedan has displaced the Kia Sportage sport-utility vehicle as the worst with 305 problems per 100 vehicles.

Some cars had higher driver death rates than the four-door, four-wheel drive Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle and had fatal rollover scores roughly the same as Explorer's. These cars include Subaru Legacy and Outback station wagon, Oldsmobile Achieva, Chevrolet Cavalier, Pontiac Grand Am, Dodge and Plymouth Neon, Chrysler LHS and Ford Crown Victoria. The information is based on an analysis by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety of fatal crashes in 1995-98 that covered 1994-97 models.

Article Abstract:
Several motor vehicle manufacturers are developing new models based on popular and successful predecessors in the 1950s. Porsche has launched a new automobile based on Porsche race cars in the 1950s, while Volkswagenwerke AG has created a modern version of its very popular beetle. Other car manufacturers integrating current technology with past models include Daimler-Chrysler, which traces the origin of its clean-diesel Dodge Power Wagon pickup truck and the Chrysler PT Cruiser to models in the 1930s and 1940s.
