The California state Public Utilities Commission has approved a petition by Pacific Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison to implement electricity rate increases. Both utilities are confronting diminishing power reserves and bankruptcy. They plan to boost rates as early as Jan 4, 2001. The action has triggered outrage among California customers and consumer groups. However, utility officials pointed out that the increase was necessary to counter a power supply shortage stretching from Seattle to the San Fernando Valley in California.

Chicago, IL's O'Hare International Airport is expected to have over 19 million people in passenger traffic for the 1999 holiday season. The number of travelers for the busy airport is expected to increase from an average of 198,000 on a regular day to 260,000 for the holidays. Thus, airport officials and staff are under strong pressure to minimize flight delays and to ensure that baggage handling, food and beverage and other services are always available to all fliers.

The Los Angeles, CA, Metropolitan Transportation Authority has unveiled the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art mass bus transportation system in the hopes of increasing ridership. If their plan works, the system will not only prosper but may, in turn, feed riders into the city's embattled mass rail transit lines, which carry less than one-tenth the riders carried by other big city rail systems such as those in New York, NY, and Boston, MA.
