Procter and Gamble Co of Cincinnati, OH, is prepared to spend over $140 billion for the acquisition of drug manufacturers Warner-Lambert Co and American Home Products Corp, both based in New Jersey. Both Warner-Lambert and American Home Products, which have agreed to merge, are facing a hostile takeover New York-based Pfizer. Procter and Gamble, which is determined to effect the acquisition, has nevertheless signified that it wants to avoid a bidding war with Pfizer.

Bestfoods in negotiating for the acquisition of Campbell Soup Co for over $15 billion. The move is seen as the only alternative to the unsolicited $18.8-billion takeover bid by Unilever. Bestfoods is reportedly negotiating with Chase Manhattan Bank NA and Citigroup for loans to finance the transaction. Its board will meet on Jun 5, 2000 to discuss the matter as well as the possibility of acquiring Pillsbury Co.
