Battle for the skies

Article Abstract:

Thai International Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines Ltd. and Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. have been accused of dumping excess capacity in Australia. The new competitive market threatens both Quantas Airlines' long-term market share and the viability of Ansett Airlines international operations. Asian carriers deny the charges and claim they are taking up rights they are entitled to under aviation agreements.

Virgin Blue and Impulse airlines have not been around very long in Australia, but in 2001 a growing number of business travellers are using their low-cost services. A slow economy is probably a major reason as companies seek to cut costs.
