Article Abstract:
Wilhelm von Roentgen's discovery of x-rays and Henri Becquerel's discovery of radioactivity helped to spur the development of food irradiation as a preservation technique. However, regulations from the Food and Drug Administration during the late 1960s served to discourage interest in the technology. Despite varying obstacles to food irradiation, research continued to determine benefits and costs of using radiation to preserve food. Supporters of the technique feel that food irradiation is the solution to many problems concerning food preservation.
