Pentagon mobilizes renovation

Article Abstract:

The Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense located on the Potomac River in Arlington, VA, is in the middle of a renovation that is projected to take over 20 years to be completed at a cost of $1.2 billion. Started in 1993, the renovation involves razing the 6.5-million- sq-ft building, relocating 25,000 employees, safely removing hazardous materials and building a completely new look for the building's interior. The project is estimated to be completed in 2014.

Army's `smart' gear isn't making sense

Article Abstract:

The US Army's program to outfit infantry soldiers with advanced digital technology and `smart' rifles is being criticized by government and independent analysts as too heavy, too cumbersome and too expensive. The target of criticisms are the $3.5-million Land Warrior computerized communications, navigation, targeting and protection system, and the computer-controlled rifle Objective Individual Combat Weapon. Glitches in the Land Warrior program forced the Army to delay its launch until 2004.

Army's new high-tech laser is right on target

Article Abstract:

The US Army has successfully tested a high-energy laser that is capable of shooting down short-range rockets. The Tactical High Energy Laser (THEL) system, developed by the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command in cooperation with TRW Corp of Israel, successfully shot down a Katyusha rocket within seconds of its launch. THEL, which is specifically aimed at missiles with ranges of 12 miles, is expected to be deployed in the northern borders of Israel in 2001.
