Attitudes of parents

Article Abstract:

The role of parents in the curtailment of alcohol abuse by adolescents cannot be underestimated. However, parents themselves are divided on the issue of underage drinking. Some parents consider it to be a rite of passage, while others supervise parties held at their homes and educate their kids on the dangers of alcohol abuse. Studies show that youths are more likely to lessen consumption if made to undergo such supervision, and if parents were more involved in their children's activities.

Article Abstract:

The underage drinking issue has prompted many sectors of society to take actions to help solve the problem. The alcoholic beverage industry has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to educate the drinking public on the dangers of alcohol abuse. Colleges, universities and student groups have mobilized their resources as well. Private citizens have also joined industry and government agencies in combating the problem. All have ageeed that the curtailment of underage drinking can save lives.

At issue: is parents' behavior to blame for the nation's high rate of infant mortality?

Article Abstract:

The issue of parental behavior as a factor for the country's high incidence of infant death is discussed. The view supporting parental responsibility cites such practices as drug use during pregnancy and other dangerous lifestyles that affect the fetus. The contrary opinion criticizes the former view since it does not account for the insufficiency of prenatal care programs and the cost of the service which have prevented poor pregnant women from availing of the service in the first place.
