Airlines promised quicker refunds for unused tickets after an audit by the Dept of Transportation Inspector General discovered they were holding onto travellers' money too long. Federal rules require airlines to refund credit card purchases within seven days and 20 days for cash or check purchases. The audit revealed that six of 16 airlines complied less than 83% of the time with one of the two requirements. Only Southwest and Northwest were able to process all credit card refunds with seven days.

An aviation industry panel has recommended that closed-circuit TV cameras be installed in jetliner cabins to deter possible attacks by hijackers, bombers or angry passengers. The cameras could be used to monitor the movement of passengers as they walk to the lavatories or approach the cockpit. Cameras mounted outside the plane could also be used by airline crews to find out if somebody is approaching the aicraft on the ground.
