Venezuela's consumer protection agency is blaming both Bridgestone/Firestone Inc and Ford Motor Co for tire tread separation problems linked to at least 47 deaths in rollovers of Ford Explorer sport- utility vehicles. The agency considers the companies' conduct criminal for failing to inform the public of the tread separation problem when they first became aware of it. Samuel Ruh, head of the consumer agency, has already referred the case to prosecutors.

Major airlines are planning to add more flights and more new planes to their operations in 1999 to better position themselves for competition. Airlines are also offering lower fares to lure travelers to take their services. According to industry observers, if this trend will continue among airlines, it could mean savings to travelers.
