Airlines are offering big discounts on first- and business-class airfares to fill empty seats formerly taken by business travelers. For example, Delta Air Lines Inc offers a 60% discount on round-trip business-class fares from New York, NY, to Paris, France through Aug 31, 2001. Likewise, US Airways Inc in May started to offer first-class seats at full coach prices. Also in May, Northwest Airlines launched a category of first-class fares that are as much as 60% lower than regular first-class prices.

The airline industry could face its first quarterly loss in years after business travelers complained of high fare increases in 2000. United has already told Wall Street analysts that its 1st qtr 2001 loss would be substantially greater than what analysts had expected due to the US' slowing economy and a labor dispute with its mechanics. American Airlines said it would register a modest loss together with Delta and Northwest Airlines.

Some major airlines have increased their budgets for food service by as much as 8% starting in 2000. In 1999, average meal shortages were still about 0.8% despite efforts by carriers to address this problem. In 2000, the highest increase is by American Airlines Inc, spending $8.20 a passenger on food. Most of these food budget increases are for improving meals and putting more food on shorter or domestic flights.
