Critics warn that more acrimonious management-labor relations await air travellers if the US government allows two impending airline mergers to push through. These are United Airlines' proposal to acquire 80% of US Airways and American Airline's plan to purchase financially-struggling Trans World Airlines and 20% of US Airways. More travellers would be inconvenienced by labor problems at megacarriers while other airlines would not have the capacity to fill in the slack.

UAL Corp, parent of United Airlines, is seeking to acquire America West Holdings Corp, parent of America West Inc, for more than $1 billion. The deal would enable United to boost its market in the Southwest.
