Airline mergers could mean bigger labor pains

Article Abstract:

Critics warn that more acrimonious management-labor relations await air travellers if the US government allows two impending airline mergers to push through. These are United Airlines' proposal to acquire 80% of US Airways and American Airline's plan to purchase financially-struggling Trans World Airlines and 20% of US Airways. More travellers would be inconvenienced by labor problems at megacarriers while other airlines would not have the capacity to fill in the slack.

Airline hit with antitrust suit

Article Abstract:

American Airlines Inc has been sued by the Dept of Justice for its alleged antitrust practices. The government said that the airline lowered its fares and increased frequency on routes to crush its discount airline competitors in Dallas-Forth Worth Airport. The two-year inquiry by the government also showed that American sharply increased its fares and offered less frequency of flights when their competitors were driven off the routes.
