Orlando, FL-based AirTran Airways Inc has initiated business moves that it hopes would land it on the top half of the industry by the end of 2000. The carrier, which operates 280 flights daily to 31 US cities, is one of the low-fare airlines in the country. Its business plan includes retraining its workers to improve customer service, upgrading its flight data system and targeting business travelers.

The number of passenger complaints about the top 10 US airlines from Jan- Mar 2000 increased 89% from the same period in 1999. The complaints sent to the Dept of Transportation have not decreased despite a promise from the airlines in Dec 1999 to improve their services. Threaten with a consumer-protection legislation by Congress, 14 carriers voluntarily adopted a set of basic customer-service standards, called Customers First, that boasts '12 commitments' to travelers.
