Unknown professional tennis players in the 1998 French Open beat better ranked players such as Pete Sampras, Petr Korda, Andre Agassi, and Gustavo Kuerten. Only Marcelo Rios survived to the third round but lost to Spaniard Carlos Moya in the quarter-finals. Moya went on to win the title. Furthermore, on the women's side, Monica Seles and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario played in the final with Sanchez-Vicario winning.
