Article Abstract:

Research continues to improve drug therapies for HIV and AIDS despite concerns raised by major pharmaceutical corporations. Drug firms view the costs of developing therapies and vaccines too costly and inaccessible to poorer regions where HIV and AIDS are severe threats. Testing may also raise ethical concerns, as human subjects would be needed to conduct drug trials.

Embryo Research

Researchers have discovered a variety of cells, called stem cells, in human embryos and fetuses, with the potential to be trained to grow into any desired healthy body part. Debate is being waged over the ethics of embryo research, many argue over whether stem cell research is covered by the 1995 ban on the federal funding of research on embryos.
