Article Abstract:

It is estimated that there are close to 477,000 alcoholics in Canada and thousands of people who are addicted to drugs. Addictions contribute to many social and economic ills. Although some studies show drinking and drug use are declining, it is still a major problem because of their associated costs.

Empty pews, angry members: churches confront the decline

Article Abstract:

Old doctrines that do not reflect more modern social beliefs, or doctrines that represent specific modern beliefs, can cause parishioners to quit attending church. Social disruption is also attributed to the decline in church attendance by Canadians. The doctrines of four churches are described.
