Article Abstract:

The House and Senate are expected to conduct and complete hearings on Sept 6, 2000, on why matters got out of hand regarding the catastrophic failures of Firestone tires that have caused the deaths of more than 100 people in the US and abroad, thus far. Central to both inquiries is a government monitoring system, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which may have ignored early signs of serious defects in Firestone's sport utility vehicle and light truck tires.

$1.7B could settle accusations that MetLife misled customers

Article Abstract:

Metropolitan Life Insurance Co of New York, NY, has announced on Aug 18, 1999, that it is willing to settle a class-action suit filed against it for alleged deceptive trade practices. The proposed settlement of $1.7 billion will either be in the form of cash payments or free insurance. The settlement offer will be given to Metropolitan Life's customers who have bought whole life or universal life policies or annuities from Jan 1, 1982 through Dec 31, 1997.
