TacSAS battlefield weather-data system begins preliminary tests in Europe and US

Article Abstract:

Tactical Satellite Acquisition System (TacSAS), a satellite data-based alternative to balloon-borne sounding systems for artillery met (meteorological) data acquisition on the battlefield has begun preliminary testing in the US and Europe. TacSAS processes data transmitted by orbiting weather satellites to derive the atmospheric profiles in place of the atmospheric vertical profiles (relating to temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind data as a function of height) normally gathered using sensors attached to ascending weather balloons.
