Samir Qassir, the Lebanese columnist, was killed on 2 June 2005, because he was acting as a middleman between Syria's banned Muslim Brotherhood and left-wing elements exploring the possibility of an opposition alliance to challenge the increasingly beleaguered Ba'athist regime in Damascus. He was one of the key opposition figures responsible for organizing anti-Syrian protests in the capital following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri on 14 February 2005.

Mehlis report leaves motive for Hariri assassination unclear

Article Abstract:

The German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis report on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has left open the important question of political or criminal motive. The technical evidence is strong, but the report does not factor in the historic web of corruption and business and political alliances within the Syrian intelligence structures in Lebanon.

Humanitarian crisis escalates in Darfur

Article Abstract:

The humanitarian toll of the crisis in Sudan's western Darfur province is increasing day by day. At least 30,000 African-American Muslims belonging to the Tijaniya Sufi branch of Islam were killed and more than one million people were forcefully driven from their homes by the Arab janjaweed militia since the conflict erupted in 2003.
