Article Abstract:
The first test flight of the AH-1Z SuperCobra is slated for Oct 2000 while the first flight of the UH-1Y version of the 'Huey' is scheduled for Nov 2000. The flights are the culmination of Bell Helicopter Textron Inc's remanufacture and upgrade of H-1 helicopters for the Marine Corps. The company is planning the remanufacturing of 180 AH-1W and 100 UH-1N and HH- 1N helicopters into the AH-1Z and UH-1Y four-bladed-rotor configurations. Among the planned improvements are the sharing of common engines, avvionics and drive trains between the two configurations.

The T-6A Texan II, which is built by Raytheon Aircraft Company, has begun training student naval flight officers at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. The T-6A is intended to replace the T-34C Turbo-mentor in basic and primary training of naval aviators and naval flight officers.

Selection of Boring by the Navy for the future Multimission Maritime Aircraft (MMA) program marked a milestone for L-3 Communications' Integrated Systems sector. L-3 returned a P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft to the Navy, the first of 16 being refurnished under the Navy's enhanced Special Structural Inspection (ESSI) program. Performed under ESSI are structural inspections, pre-emptive repairs and structural enhancements, including replacements of major sections of the wings.
