Article Abstract:
A scientist has discovered that the sounds emitted by marine mammals can be localized even within a background of stationary noises through the use of advanced signal processing. The method to localize animal sounds was determined by analyzing transient acoustic signals such as submarine sounds detected by a long-towed array. The method can prevent the acoustic impact of high-power sources which can make nearby marine animals deaf when these sources are switched on.
