Article Abstract:
The latest crop of state-of-art electronic capabilities utilized by 21st century surface combatants and the development of a new generation of naval electronic warfare (EW) systems are discussed. Thales is developing an advanced EW suite for the Franco-Italian Horizon frigates, Elsira Electronics Systems is offering the NS-9003A-V2-9005A-V2 integrated naval ESM/ECM suite and Elettronica is offering a wide range of equipments for surface warships.

An electro-optical surveillance system is the sensor technology most favored for integration on board small fast patrol boats, allowing the crew to maintain a high-quality situational awareness to visually identify any contracts in the area at night and in reduced visibility. This system enables to perform an important role in deterring and preventing international terrorism, piracy, arms and smuggling and illegal immigration.

Active electronically scanned phased-array radars are playing a staring role in a new generation of naval tracking and fire-control technologies. However, the rotating electro-optical (EO) sensors and the traditional mechanically pointed multi-sensor fire-control systems with radars and cameras are still very much in demand to control anti-air and anti-surface gunnery and short- to medium-range surface-to-air missile systems.
