India to hold multinational exercises

Article Abstract:

India will host bilateral and multinational naval exercises at the end of Feb 2001. The home-nation contingent will be joined by 25 warships from foreign navies. The naval expansion of the country continues apace, with the second of a batch of three Russian-built frigates launched at the close of 2000 and the commissioning of a destroyer in 2001. The Improved Krivak III-class frigate Trishul follows that of the Talwar in May 2000 and a third may follow in 2003.

French `marriage' begets problems and potential

Article Abstract:

Thomson-CSF has entered into a 50-50 joint venture with Direction des Constructions Navales to form a still-to-be-named company for naval programs. However, Thomson-CSF, which will provide the first president of the joint venture firm, stated that several issues such as the value of the company and marketing strategy have still to be agreed upon. The joint venture company is expected to earn $657 million in revenues for fiscal year 2003-2004.

Ageing fleet seeks change for the better

Article Abstract:

The Mexican Navy is faced with the need to massively invest in re- equipment. Its grossly antiquated equipment inventory must be approaching the end of their useful lives. Therefore, their replacement is an urgent requirement, particularly, in the face of two of its most persistent problems, namely, the incursion of foreign fishery poachers and narcotics shipments which are likely to increase.
