Article Abstract:

A Great Lakes Security and Development Pact was signed on December 15, 2006, between 11 African countries, which has reflected major improvements in regional security and co-operation. The question of whether such a pact would mark a new beginning or only a false dawn for the region is examined.

Islamist group have capitalized on a rapidly growing Muslim population in East Africa by taking the advantage of weak government and widespread corruption. The USA has set up an anti-terror unit to monitor the operations of terrorist groups with alleged links to the Al-Qaeda network in Africa.
