Article Abstract:
Eero Lavonen, Director General of the Central Department of the Finnish Ministry of Defense, said the F-18 Hornet jet fighters, wheeled APCs, tracked IFVs, medium-range anti-tank missiles are some of the most important procurement programs of the Finnish Armed Forces. Lavonen added the the F-18 program has proceeded as planned and the last of the 57 single-seater units would be delivered by Aug 2000. He also stated that the contracts for the Nordic Standard Helicopter would be signed by the end of 2000.

Finland's new defense procurement offset guidelines emphasize industrial participation to give the domestic defense industry a chance to manufacture the parts and assemble the purchased equipment. Special preference would also be given to the promotion of Finnish defense exports and on the transfer of advanced technology to the Finnish defense industry. Industrial participation is also aimed for the benefit of small and medium-sized companies in the field of high technology.

The joint venture company that Finmeccanica SpA of Italy and European Aerospace and Defence Co is expected to make a great impact on the European defense and aerospace industry. European Military Aircraft Co, the suggested tentative name of the joint venture, is speculated to have a dominating role in important European programs, including a 62.5% share in Eurofighter and 71% in A-400M. The joint ventur is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2000.
