Wireless and mobile

Article Abstract:

The US Army's Communications-Electronic Command (CECOM) is increasingly adapting commercial off-the-shelf communications technnology for military uses. Instead of developing technology that is strictly for military use, as was the practice in the past, CECOM has began evaluating commercially developed technology for their military potential. This tactic is now being used in adapting the conventional digital cellular phone into a universal, secure communication equipment for tomorrow's warfighters.

Hovering C-130

Article Abstract:

Bell Helicopter Textron is developing a new, large, quad tilt-rotor aircraft with great potential utility for the Marine Corps and other armed force service branches. The new aircraft would have the cargo capacity of a C-130. Its fuselage is roughly the size of a stretched C-130-30 model but lacks a vertical tail and uses two MV-22 Osprey-type wings, forward and aft. Engines and prop motors are mounted on the outboard tips of each wing. The aircraft would fly at 280-knot cruise speed and feature air-to- air refueling capability.
