Decommissioning signals end of Provisional IRA's armed struggle

Article Abstract:

The Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) is gradually decommissioning its substantial arsenal as part of the Northern Ireland peace process and it is culminating in a final act of decommissioning in September 2005. It is probable that the significant amount of weaponry put beyond use by the PIRA is sufficient to rule out a return to any important level of armed conflict for the foreseeable future.

Police build cross-border co-operation to take on Irish organized crime

Article Abstract:

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the Garda Siochana published a joint Cross Border Organized Crime Threat assessment and strategy to improve cross-border co-ordination between the two agencies in the fight against organized crime. The police from the north and south conducted a number of cross-border joint investigations into the activities of organized crime groups.

The PIRA's Colombian escapade ends in arms decommissioning

Article Abstract:

The arrest of three members of the Irish Republican Army, who were visiting rebel forces in Colombia, led to outrage against the IRA in Washington. It is thought that this, in turn, led to the decision of the IRA to put aside some of its weapons.
