The UK Royal Navy (RN) celebrated its 100 years with a continuing repair and recovery program as most of its boats are currently removed from operations. On Jan 31, 2001, the lead boat of a new class of nuclear- powered attack submarine was accepted into service, launching a year-long program of events to celebrate the achievements of the RN's Submarine Service since its inception. After a century, the Submarine Service today faces a crucial and challenging point in its history.

The UK Ministry of Defense has issued to five local shipbuilders the Invitations to Tender for the two new large landing ships (LSLs) intended to replace the Royal Fleet Auxilliary's Sir Percival and Sir Geriant LSLs n 2003 or 2004. The five are Swan Hunter, BAE Systems, Harland And Wolf, Cammel Laird and Appledore Shipbuilders. The contract, which is worth about $199.61 million, includes options for up to three additional ships of the class.
