Canada to allow women to serve on submarines

Article Abstract:

Women will be allowed to serve on Canadian submarines, according to Gen Maurice Baril, Chief of the Canadian Defence Staff. Vice Adm Greg Maddison, head of Canada's navy, recommended the decision, which was supported by National Defence Minister Art Eggleton. The first batch of women are scheduled to start training in Oct 2001. In 1989, the Canadian Human Rights tribunal ruled that women be excluded from submarine service owing to privacy concerns. However, with the spacious Victoria-class vessels, the Canadian Navy has decided that there is now enough room to provide sufficient privacy.
