First deployment of the fighters was marked on October 15, 2005 when 1st Fighter Wing at Langley AFB, sent some of its new F/A-22 Raptors to Hill AFB, Utah who wrapped up their action and returned on October 28, 2005. The trip was intended to give 167 airmen who were deployed form Langley to Hill for a two-week training period, the chance to practice wartime capabilities in a foreign environment.

The Pentagon has announced that September 19, 2005 was the last day of operations for the last existing LGM-118 Peacekeeper Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. Peacekeeper, once called 'MX' for mission experimental, was fielded in the Reagan years and its demise is the latest stage in a transition from the Cold War's tense superpower standoff to a new stance.
