Boeing Co and McDonnell Douglas Corp's $15-billion merger was approved by the US government in the first week of Jul 1997, and Lockheed Martin Corp announced its intention to acquire Northrop Grumman Co for over $11.5 billion. Facing strong objections from the European Competition Commission, Boeing and McDonnell will be officially incorporated on Aug 1, 1997, and on Aug 4, 1997, the two firms would commence trading under the new name, Boeing Co. Meanwhile, the Lockheed Martin-Northrop Grumman deal would make Lockheed Martin a $37-billion company that employs some 230,000 people.

DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG of Germany reports that overall revenues for 1998 reaches DM17.2 bil as orders are up by 40% with total value of DM27,1 bil. The increase in revenues are due to contracts for 556 Airbus planes, increase sales of aircraft engines, contract for 148 Eurofighters and MiG-29 upgrades for Southeast European forces. The company also attributed its rise in turnovers to efficient fiscal management which cuts cost by 30%.

Northrop Grumman Corp of Los Angeles, CA, and DaimlerChrysler Aerospace of Germany have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly evaluate opportunities for business alliances in several technology areas that will be mutually beneficial to both companies. These include ground surveillance systems, unammaned aerial vehicle technology, unmanned underwater vehicle technology and airborne radars.
