Article Abstract:
The way the 1st Marine Division developed, refined and adapted fire support coordination in order to meet the needs of the maneuver commanders during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) is discussed. The predeployment training and the major issues that presented during the course of conflicts where tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP) were developed just before or during the fight vice from the division tactical standing operating procedures (SOPs) are described.

A company commander's perspective on the Iraqi terrorists improvised explosive device (IED) campaign, which the coalition forces have been unable to effectively counter, is discussed. Improvement in the technological edge, military tactics, procuring life saving equipment for the Marines and M1114 up-armored HMMWVs with heavy machine guns will help the coalition forces to tackle with the Iraqi terrorists who employ IEDs.

The guidance that was issued to 1st Battalion, 11th Marines as they were deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom is described. The main priorities for training are preparing for combat, training future leaders and building a cohesive team.
