Siemens AG has developed polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell modules used in air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems for modern submarines. The company's PEM fuel cells are based on a metal technology for the bipolar plates which have potential for low-cost mass production. Siemens is focusing on the development of 120kW modules using improved core materials and proven manufacturing and processing technology. The company said that the key to boosting power from the exiting 34Kw to 120Kw is by increasing the number fuel cells and using membranes with lower internal resistivity.

Howaldstswerke Deutsche Werft AG (HDW) has developed an air-independent propulsion system for submarines using polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The main components of the system includes the PEM fuel cell plant which consists of individual cells with low cell area combined in a high-performance module with 34 kW nominal output, the hydrogen storage in metal hydride containers and the LOX tanks. HDW said that a 240 kW PEM fuel cell system has advantages for the modernization of Class 208 submarines.
