The meaning of the murders

Article Abstract:

There is a perceptible rise in the number of independent reporters and news organizations across the world, despite the increasing incidence of violence against journalists. Much of the violence and repression against reporters is getting widespread coverage. The death of one reporter every week is a consistent pattern followed throughout the world. The murder of reporters is symptomatic of the problems facing a country. In the former Yugoslavia murders were related to ethnicity, in Colombia they are drug-cartel related and in Algeria it is due to civil war. Most of these murders remain unsolved.

Corporate journalism and community service

Article Abstract:

Newspaper corporations should be accountable to the community they serve instead of being responsible to shareholders and aiming at maximizing profits. News corporations are increasingly cutting down on newsroom staff and budgets, and are giving comprehensive news coverage a lower priority. Newspaper managers take recourse to short term profitable decisions instead of long term pragmatic decisions as their compensations are closely linked to the newspapers' annual profits. The hard-core readers are alienated as the newspapers prioritizes gimmicks to serious news coverage.
