British Telecommunications PLC claims broadband internet services, which enables the internet to compete with broadcast television's audiovisual quality, will be available soon. The new technology requires video streaming, and the three main competing formats are Apple Computer's Quicktime, Microsoft's Windows Media Player, and RealNetworks' RealPlayer.

After his falling out with the BBC in 1999, Noel Edmonds became chairman of the independent broadcaster Unique Group. He is discussing delivery platforms with NTL Group Ltd and British Telecommunications PLC, because he feels that in two years or less video broadcasting will replace outside broadcasting.
