Independent programme producer Allan McKeown is married to Tracey Ullman, who is the star of Tracey Takes On. McKeown and Ullman jointly own Takes On Productions which has the rights to the award winning show. McKeown formed Witzend productions in 1979 and produced many successful UK television series, however a potential sale to Paramount for $3 million fell through when it was discovered Witzend did not own distribution rights for its programmes. McKeown launched SelecTV in 1995, which he sold in 1996 for 46 million pounds sterling.

Dutch independent television production company IDTV has a very strong presence, producing many programmes in every genre for the domestic market. It has been successful with high-quality and reality dramas, and is also benefiting from strong viewer interest in infotainment. However, it has been most successful with gameshows and entertainment, and now makes 1,000 house of gameshows for the Dutch market alone. It has a very creative approach, and currently has 120 projects in development.

Risky business

Article Abstract:

The part sale of independent production company Mentorn films has raised the question that the company is in need of finance and is experiencing economic difficulties like many other small companies in this sector of the British market. Small companies find it hard to compete with the large corporations like ITV and the BBC when hiring suitable actors and can not raise finance by selling their programs to the United States until they have a large number of programmes.
