Yorkshire Tyne-Tees Television's former boss, Bruce Gyngell, who also serves as the chairman of Australia's Nine Network, is advocating abolition of the Independent Television Commission (ITC). Gyngell told participants at the News World Technology Conference in London, UK, on May 18, 1998 that the requirements implemented by ITC is irrelevant in a multi-channel commercial world, particularly those rulings concerning specific news bulletins. Gyngell also stressed that ITC lacks the faculty to appreciate modern, multi-channel broadcasting as shown on the commission's recent Annual Performance Review.

The London Studios has been awarded with a contract, valued at 2 million pounds sterling, to shoot and transmit children series SMTV:/Live, which will be shown on ITV every Saturday morning. The contract, which calls for London Studios to start shooting the series in autumn 1998, is considered as one of the largest deals received by the studio in 1998. London Studios Director of sales and marketing, Penny Lent, noted that the contract compensates the upgrading works done by the studio, which cost the firm 5 million pounds sterling to complete.

BBC forges a partnership with the WebTV Networks of Microsoft in a deal that will enable BBC to become the first broadcaster in the United Kingdom to test enhanced and interactive television. The interactive-television tests will require WebTV to be provided by BBC with shows, which will be connected to related sites on the Internet through technology supplied by WebTV. The interactive-television trials are also inclusive of the participation of BT, the partner for the Web of Microsoft in the United Kingdom.
