Article Abstract:
A state-by-state legislative update concerning the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act, juvenile records, public access to electronic meetings and documents, journalists' newsgathering rights, political advertising regulations and sex offender tracking is provided for 1997. Some states are allowing drivers to restrict access to their personal information in Dept of Motor Vehicles' records. Several states are increasing access to juvenile records, with Iowa releasing records on ten years olds or older. State access laws in many states are expanding to include electronic media.

Police records are important resources for reporters and so knowing how to obtain this information is essential. Police information is usually obtained from the log of all calls for assistance, the incident report or the arrest log. Most states have open records laws allowing access to public records, but police departments often have their own policies. Knowing members of a police force can be beneficial. A state-by-state analysis of police record access is provided.
