Pentagon, journalists agree on most war coverage rules

Article Abstract:

The Persian Gulf War of 1991 brought many complaints from journalists regarding the Defense Department's restrictions on the press. In response to these complaints the Pentagon and journalists have been meeting and have agreed on nine guidelines covering issues of access, press pools, transportation, accreditation and suspension of press credentials. Agreement could not be reached on the issue of the Defense Department security review of articles and film prior to their release.

Pentagon proposes pool membership rules

Article Abstract:

The Department of Defense (DOD) has issued proposed guidelines for including journalists in its National Media Pool. The pool was established in the aftermath of the Grenada invasion, in which DOD was criticized for restricting the press. DOD states that it is only formalizing rules already in practice, but current members of the pool disagree. Pool members state that, under the new guidelines, DOD will be choosing who will be in the pool instead of the news industry.

Pentagon adopts revised media pool rules

Article Abstract:

The Department of Defense has changed the National Media Pool requirements in accordance with some press suggestions, although new restrictions have also been added. The changes include greater leniency regarding media cognizance of military operations and material-sharing within the press pool. The US citizenship requirement has been maintained because the Pentagon says it makes it easier to get visas for pool members.
