Guerin's death mobilizes journalists

Article Abstract:

The death of Veronica Guerin, an investigative reporter of 'The Sunday Independent,' has mobilized Irish journalists to examine the financial and physical protection accorded to freelance reporters. Guerin was shot dead in her car south of Dublin on June 26, 1996 while investigating the lives of Ireland's drug dealers. The Irish and British editors have decided to continue the investigations initiated by Guerin. A conference on investigative journalism in Ireland developed the 'Guerin Principles' to reaffirm the commitment of journalists to investigative reportage.

Justice gone awry: Tribune examines hundreds of Death Row cases to reveal state's faulty lawyers, evidence, system

Article Abstract:

Investigations by the Chicago Tribune led to the exoneration of 13 prisoners sentenced to death in Illinois. Gov George Ryan suspended the death penalty in light of the number of improperly convicted criminals. The Tribune's examination of all 285 death penalty cases in Illinois and their problems is presented.

Shadowy saboteurs: unearthing eco-terrorism in the American West

Article Abstract:

Damaging acts done to property in the name of environmental activism are becoming a public danger, as the acts affect the public's well-being, and the government does little to prevent the acts. Stepped-up efforts to prevent further acts of eco-terrorism have been taken in Oregon, where many acts have occurred.
