Van Pelt was a John W. Campbell award finalist for Best New Writer in 1999. He thanks his mother for choosing books over candy for him when he was a child. He also thanks his father, an aeronautical engineer, for showing him Saturn's rings, watching Scifi theater with him and explaining to him the difference between real science and dramatic license.
