Article Abstract:
The Fund for Investigative Journalism has helped the small, independent and non-profit magazine 'The Progressive' publish several investigative reports which were outside the publication's budget. The editorial board of the monthly magazine, which was founded in 1909 by Sen Robert LaFollette, identifies the Fund as the bridge that enables them to publish investigative journalism. In Jul 1996, the Fund financed a three-part series on prison issues. This included an article, entitled 'Stunning Technology,' which revealed the lethal consequences of a new device know as the 'stun belt.'

Techniques to improve editorial writing are described. The first and most important is making a personal research on the issue to establish straight and relevant facts. Editorials should also contain catchy headers and snappy instead of underwhelming conclusions. Follow-up stories should be made whenever it is possible. Issues are more interesting if it contains information that are beyond the obvious. Moreover, editors must not be afraid to be the first to raise an issue.

An increasing number of editorial writers are recognizing the importance of investigative reporting as a way to improve the credibility of editorial and commentary pages and to effectively stir public interest. Moreover, investigative editorial writing, contrary to many beliefs, would not preclude original reporting or disrupt traditional division between the opinion and news pages of a newspaper.
