Article Abstract:
An analysis of US local exchange carrier (LEC) performance as determined by the embodiment hypothesis reveals that the conventional specification of the cost function may not adequately reflect LEC technological structure. The study shows that a competition index may inserted in place of the time variable to control for disembodied technical change with the resulting variables aptly able to explain more than half the rate of technical change.

An analysis of the restructuring issues facing INTELSAT reveals that there are a number of administrative and economic issues facing restructuring efforts. Economic issues include network economics, public goods services, economic development, competition, vertical power, rate averaging and marketing inefficiencies. There is also a question of allocating slots across companies and governments in separate countries.

Analysis of the economies of scope affecting the US telecommunications industry reveals that operations diversity is directly related to firm-level efficiency. The study reveals that the generation of multiple outputs does lead to a reduction in average unit costs for sample firms and that technology diffusion is positively associated with superior firm performance.
